With their lack of anything horizontal or vertical to make us aware of directionality, delicate Arabic numerals were developed for use in watches in the 1700s, on the premise that they be laid out in a circular manner. This font - written by artisans using an ink brush – and its flowing lines was often used for ladies’ watches.
To make these letters as precise as possible, the printing plate was re-adjusted. The fine parts were shaved down to the very limit - in 1/100mm units - into sharp lines. The thick parts were given a natural three-dimensional appearance through building up the printing layer upon layer, while thinning down the art template. Pursuing a balance of thick and thin makes this very watch-like font even more alluring. |
