If it is beautifully polished,
any metal radiates light and becomes an object of brilliance.
The labor and techniques that make this brightness are respected
and monetary consideration is paid for them. Various polishing
techniques have been studied and used over the long history
of watch manufacturing, and “Sallaz polishing*”
towers above the others in terms of beauty of finish. The
kind of watch design suitable for “Sallaz polishing”
was considered. Polishing can be performed without problems
for a shape consisting of a simple plane surface and a quadric
surface. This solid form consisting of “surfaces”
invokes the stone busts that are displayed in art classrooms.
*Sallaz Polishing
A type of mirror polishing technique named after the machine
used in the process. Since polishing involves the application
of an attachment with the material to be polished fixed to
it to a flat rotating plate covered with an abrading agent,
it is not suited to surfaces that are concave or those that
are cubic. The technique requires an extremely high-level
of skill, and the specularity and brilliance of the finish
is beyond comparison. Circular and linear polishing motions
are generally used, and manipulation of the apparatus in a
smooth unbroken movement is essential for the creation of
beautiful mirrored surfaces. |
